Changing Broadband Service Provider

A smooth change of broadband provider is only guaranteed with research and planning ahead of the decision to move. What are the comparative costs of the services, quality of support and length of contract?

Migration Authorisation Codes, MAC

The use of Migration Authorisation Codes is a way of migrating from one provider to another without any interruption of service.

  • Your current service can be delivered by IPstream or Datastream
  • Provision of a MAC on request is a requirement of Ofcom.
  • MACs are only valid for 30-days

Planning the change

You should have the answers to the following questions prior to requesting a transfer to another ISP:

  • When does my existing contract expire? What is the contract period?
  • If I terminate my contract early, what financial penalties will be levied? Will I have to return hardware?
  • How does the new provider's broadband service compare to my existing provider's?
  • How does the new provider's support compare to my existing provider's?

Migration Process - with MAC code

Follow these three steps:

  • Contact your existing service provider and request a MAC. Do NOT request the service to be ceased.
  • Your existing service provider will send you a MAC within 5 working days. The MAC is valid for a period of 30 days from the date that it is issued.
  • Present the MAC to the new service provider. The gaining provider will then process the request and inform you of the transfer date.

Migration Process - no MAC code

Providing a MAC upon request is an Ofcom mandatory requirement on all service providers. If you are having difficulty obtaining a MAC from your ISP, contact Ofcom.
